Federalists kick-off dialogue with Constitutional Affairs Committee
On 2 September Danuta Hübner, Chair of the Committee for Constitutional Affairs of the European Parliament, was the guest speaker at the Summer Reception of the Union of European Federalists (UEF), a yearly gathering of Brussels' leading federalists from the world of European politics, business and civil society.

Speaking on the subject "Challenges and opportunities towards a federal Europe: the role of the new European Parliament", Hübner expressed the wish that the new Constitutional Affairs Committee, and the new European Parliament as a whole, become a leading force in shaping the ongoing debate on the future of the European integration, particularly on the Eurozone governance, the relationships with non-Euro countries and future Treaty changes. She highlighted the need for the European Union to develop forms of flexibility that enable Euro-zone countries to deepen their economic and political integration and at the same time respect the wish of other member states for looser form of integration and allow further enlargement of the Union. She also invited an open debate on federalism, so often misinterpreted and misrepresented in national political debates.

The event was opened by Elmar Brok, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the European Parliament and President of the Union of European Federalists, who stressed how the crisis in the regions bordering the European Union, from Ukraine to the Middle-East, put increasing pressure and urgency on progressing European integration in the foreign security and defence field.

Among the other participants to the event, federalist-minded MEPs such as Rainer Wieland (EPP), Vice President of the European Parliament and President of the UEF German Section,  Andrey Kovatchev (EPP), Jo Leinen (S&D), Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann (S&D), Richard Corbett (S&D), Michael Gahler (EPP) and former MEPs Andrew Duff (ALDE) and Isabelle Durant (Greens).
