TO STOP THE CRISIS, FEDERAL EUROPE NOW !
On October 18-19 the European Council will meet to discuss plans for a European banking union, a fiscal union and closer political integration. In the week preceding the summit, the Union of European Federalists (UEF) and the Young European Federalists (JEF) are carrying out a campaign-week across Europe with the common slogan “TO STOP THE CRISIS, FEDERAL EUROPE NOW!”. Events are planned in 40 cities across Europe.

With their pan-European action week, UEF and JEF want to stress the need to give a solid fiscal, economic and political foundation to the European monetary union, launch a major European project to promote continent-wide growth, and address the crucial questions of reforming and governing Europe democratically and effectively. Without answering these questions, sacrifices at national level to address the debt crisis and the intervention of the European Central Bank alone will not be sufficient to win back the confidence of the European peoples, the markets and the rest of the world in the Euro and in European integration.

Plans for a banking union and a fiscal union currently under discussion will prove realistic and up to the challenges that Europe is facing only if they become part of a project for a strong political union, otherwise they will eventually loose traction. Such projects should come together into a new constitutional pact providing democratic and federal institutions for the Euro-zone and the other countries willing to join such a project” declares Pauline Gessant, President of the Young European Federalists (JEF).

Federalists across Europe are calling the European Council to approve a roadmap to convene a constituent Convention with the mandate to prepare a federal Constitution that provides the Euro-zone with adequate fiscal and economic powers and resources, and with a democratic and effective federal government and institutions, and at the same time allows forms of looser integration for those countries that don’t intend to join the Euro” declares Andrew Duff, MEP, President of the Union of European Federalists (UEF).
