Resolution on the promotion of gender equality
Adopted by the UEF Federal Committee, 22 October 2017, Paris

The UEF Federal Committee, meeting in Paris on 22 October 2017,

Having regard to articles 1 and 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of 10th December 1948;

Having regard to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2263 of 7th November 1967;

Having regard to the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, of 18th December 1979;

Having regard to article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union, that states that “equality between men and women prevail”;

Acknowledging that the principle of gender equality is fundamental to the United Nations and the European Union;

Considering unacceptable any distinction, exclusion or restriction made against women nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field;

Considering that gender discrimination affects women as well as it regards their public standing and full participation in the political, economic, social and academic circles;

Considering that the fight for gender equality is a federalist cause, inasmuch as federalism opposes any kind of open and/or subtle domination, whether political, social or sexual;

Commits the Union of European Federalists to:

a)      Support EU-wide initiatives promoting gender equality;

b)      Promote better gender balance in parliaments and governments by calling political parties to consider introducing quotas;

c)       Include gender equality as a transversal theme in its policy proposals;

d)      Strive for larger female representation at all levels of the organization;

e)      Strive for gender balance in the composition of panels, roundtables and events, as well as in speaker lists.
