Federalists call the new European Parliament to take the lead in relaunching the European political project

Brussels, 10 July 2014

To the Members of the European Parliament

On behalf of the Union of European Federalists (UEF) and the Young European Federalists (JEF), we would like to congratulate you for your election as Member of the European Parliament.

During the electoral campaign, UEF and JEF have promoted key federalist demands and have asked the support of candidates to the European Parliament from all Member States. We believe that European unity, European solidarity and European democracy are facing one of the biggest challenges since the foundation of the European Union. We European Federalists believe that the European project will not survive the current crisis or future economic turmoil, unless we complete the integration process towards a European Federation, as already foreseen by Schuman in 1950.

In the coming years this means in particular (1) to further integrate the Eurozone, progressing towards a fiscal, economic and political union, (2) to develop tools and resources to implement European policies that foster growth, particularly through further integration of the single market and European investments in projects of European interest, and (3) to address the crucial issues of the democratic legitimacy of fiscal and budgetary policies with a reform of the institutions of the EU and the Eurozone.

We count on the new European Parliament to define as soon as possible a political project along such lines and then to call for an open, public and transparent Convention, to achieve the historical goal of a European Federation. We count on you to defend European interests threatened by populism and narrow national interests, to restore democratic confidence in the future of Europe.

The Union of European Federalists (UEF) and the Young European Federalists (JEF) will always be willing to defend the European Parliament’s role recalling the spirit of 1979 and confident of the proactive role of the European Parliament to achieve European unity.

We wish you all the best during your mandate and look forward to working with you towards a federal Europe.

Sincerely Yours,

Paolo Vacca
Union of European Federalists

Pauline Gessant
Young European Federalists
